Kunal Ghosh claims 4 BJP MPs will join TMC, sparks speculation on names
Four people were killed in a road accident on National Highway 12 in the Shamsherganj police station area on Tuesday night. Around 8 PM, a speeding container truck hit a motorcycle carrying four individuals near the New Dak Bungalow-Jamia Katan stretch. Three victims died on the spot, while a critically injured minor was taken to a nursing home, where he succumbed. According to Jangipur Police District Superintendent Anand Roy, the truck attempted to flee toward Malda but was seized by the police. One deceased has been identified as Ejaz Sheikh from North Mahadevnagar, while efforts are underway to identify the others.
Following the accident, local residents blocked NH-12, preventing the police from removing the bodies and demanding action against reckless driving. Protesters alleged that police and civic volunteers regularly extort money from vehicles, disrupting traffic flow in the area. The blockade, which began shortly after the incident, lasted until 9 PM, leading to a complete standstill on both sides of the highway. Police were deployed to manage the situation, and efforts were made to restore traffic movement.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and the circumstances surrounding the truck’s movement. Officials are verifying the claims made by protesters while also examining CCTV footage from nearby locations. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and police are working on identifying the remaining victims. Traffic on NH-12 was eventually restored, and additional measures are being considered to improve road safety in the area.
